Kosovo Cities to Visit
From the capital, Pristina, to small historic towns in the country’s southern corners, Kosovo’s attractions come packed with history and culture.
If you love architecture or history, you’ll find enough places to visit in Kosovo to keep you busy for a week or more.
Pristina — Kosovo’s Capital
Kosovo’s capital, Pristina, is the country’s largest city, home to the majority ethnic Albanian population and many institutions and historic landmarks.
It’s also Kosovo’s transport hub, a crossroads for air, road, and rail travel — your trip to Kosovo will most likely start in Pristina.
Prizren — One of the Most Famous Cities
While Pristina is Kosovo’s largest city, many people consider Prizren their own cultural capital.
Prizren sits at the foot of the Sharr Mountains, near the borders with both Albania and North Macedonia — an old city full of historic sites.
Its history dates back to the early Roman era, with many influences from the medieval and Ottoman periods. Prizren is an “undiscovered tourist treasure” unlike many other spots in the Balkans.
Its old town features Byzantine and Ottoman-era architecture, and includes an old, recently renovated stone bridge dating to the 16th century, along with the UNESCO-listed Church of the Virgin of Ljeviš.
Prizren Castle, dating to the 11th century, is a particularly great spot to watch the sunrise and sunset.
Peja
Called Pejë in Albanian, and Peć in Serbian. About 85km west of the capital, Peja makes for a great weekend trip from Pristina.
The old town of Peja isn’t just full of traditional cafes and restaurants where you can try local food and browse charming shops, its religious and historic landmarks — there’s also plenty of outdoor adventure in the area.
The stunning Rugova Valley and Bjeshkët e Nemuna (Accursed Mountains) National Park are just a few kilometres from the town centre, making Peja an excellent destination for both culture and nature.
Gjakova
The quiet town of Gjakova makes a great stop while travelling between Prizren and Peja, and is one of the best places to go in Kosovo for one main reason: it’s home to the longest market in the Balkans.
Known as the Old Bazaar or Grand Bazaar, it stretches a full kilometre and is lined with around 500 shops.
There’s also a mosque, a clock tower, and several turbe (a type of Ottoman-era tomb), and the 16th-century Hadum Mosque sits nearby too.
Other Kosovo attractions include the towering Church of Saints Paul and Peter, and Gjakova’s Ethnographic Museum.
